Pianist — Neuromusic Researcher — Data Science

Where sound meets science.

I'm Laura — a conservatoire-trained pianist moving into data science. I research how music shapes the brain and build the models that measure it. Master's degrees in flamenco performance (ESMUC) and in neuromusic; currently on Cambridge PACE's Data Science Career Accelerator.

Research on the listening brain

Research interests — machine learning and deep learning applied to audio and music: representation learning, music information retrieval and computational musicology, together with the perceptual questions underneath them. What does a listener actually discriminate, and how does the brain turn sound into musical meaning?

Experiment

Just-noticeable differences in musical perception

Design of a pilot experiment on JND in musical action and perception — groundwork for doctoral research in neuromusic and psychoacoustics.

Master's thesis

Music–brain interaction & its applications

Final project of the Master's in Neuromusic (UCAM, 2025): music perception, music therapy and cognitive neuroscience applied to musical experience.

Flamenco palo classifier

Classifies four flamenco palos from audio by pairing music-theory features — Phrygian-mode energy, position within the 12-beat compás — with a Random Forest. Cross-validated F1-macro 0.645 on TONAS. Live demo →

Cantaor identity embeddings

Triplet-loss fine-tuning of pretrained OpenL3 embeddings to capture singer identity rather than style, across TONAS and cante100. Closed-set verification AUC 0.80 — with the small-sample limitations stated openly.

Course project · Clustering

Customer segmentation

K-means (k=5) over RFM-style features for 68,000 customers, cross-checked against hierarchical clustering and visualised with PCA and t-SNE. Cambridge PACE mini-project.

Music & teaching

Laura Ortega playing the piano

"Performance is where my research questions begin."

As a classical and flamenco pianist, I approach the instrument from an interdisciplinary perspective — technique, perception, and the listener's experience.

I have taught piano and modern music to students of all ages in Madrid and Barcelona, including conservatoire entrance preparation, and I currently run my own piano studio.
